Exploring the city´s cultural life

Medieval monuments and diverse museums offer some of Freiburg's most interesting cultural highlights. Take some time to get to know the city and discover its many facets. You will be inspired.

/assetimage_883_241w156.jpgFreiburg's most important cultural monument is the Münster (Cathedral). Begun in 1200 in Romanesque style (transept) and completed in 1513, the "Münster" exhibits primarily Gothic stylistic elements. The sculpted figures and stained-glass windows are impressive testimony to the plasticity and expressiveness of medieval art. One of the highlights is the high altar in the chancel by Hans Baldung Grien (1512-16).

Housed in the Augustiner Museum (Augustinian Museum) are precious treasures from the Middle Ages to the present day. Collections include paintings by Hans Baldung Grien, Matthias Grünewald and Lucas Cranach, as well as original sculpture and stained-glass windows from the Cathedral, to mention but a few. The folklore section displays regional costumes, a clock collection and folk art of the Black Forest.

/assetimage_889_240w159.jpgThe displays of the Museum für Völkerkunde (Museum of Ethnology) invite us on a "stroll" around the world and down through the ages. In the Museum für Ur- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Early and Pre-history) the visitor encounters the beginnings of human habitation between Upper and High Rhine - Celts, Romans, Franks and Alemanni.

The Museum für Neue Kunst (Museum of Modern Art) exhibits works of the 20th century by Arp, Baumeister, Dix, Heckel, Hofer, Macke and other protagonists of modern art. Additional attractions: the Zinnfigurenmuseum (Tin Figure Museum), Fasnetsmuseum (Carnival Museum), and Stuck-Museum (Stucco Museum).

Besides the Freiburg Theater which stages everything from classics to modern drama in many a novel production, Freiburg is especially renowned for its performance art. Cabaretists, jugglers, acrobats, clownery and political satire guarantee a rich and varied program. And as "Music City", Freiburg has something for every music lover - from Classical to Rock.
